　　菲尔-科林斯成为八十年代最成功的流行歌手即出乎许多人的意料也是他始料不及的。当他的第一首独唱单曲In the Air Tonight在他的家乡英国高居排行榜第二（在美国排行榜列前二十名）时，秃头、矮小的科林斯已近三十岁了。1984年至1990年间科林斯十三次进入排行榜前十名。
　　科林斯小时侯是演员兼歌星，1964年他在伦敦上演的《雾都孤儿》中扮演一个狡猾的小淘气。（此外他还在A Hard Day's Night及其他影片中扮演一些小角色。）1970年他被英国艺术摇滚乐队Genesis选中做替补鼓手，从此涉足音乐界。Genesis乐队精心制作的一些样带在英国和美国都获得一定的成功。1974年Genesis乐队的主唱歌手Peter Gabriel突然离开，乐队试听了四百名歌手的演唱都不满意，最后决定由科林斯担任主唱。
　　结果，Genesis乐队的声音逐渐简化，科林斯极富表现力的、低沉洪亮的嗓音日益强化。1978年Then There Were Three...获金唱片奖。1981年科林斯的独唱专辑Face Value问世，结果证明它比Genesis乐队的任何专辑的成绩都要好。它用悲凉、沧桑、动人心魄的伴奏来突出科林斯的嗓音，比如用钢琴和鼓伴奏的安灵歌In the Air Tonight. 八十年代期间，科林斯与Genesis乐队合作的独唱曲取得巨大成功。1992年，Genesis乐队发行专辑We Can't Dance并开始大规模巡回演出。之后1993年科林斯的专辑Both Sides发行。1995年，科林斯声明他将永远离开Genesis乐队。第二年专辑Dance into the Light问世，但未获成功，然而随后的宣传巡回演出却大获成功。1998年发行他的上榜歌曲集，一年后首张大型管乐队伴奏的唱片Hot Night in Paris问世。
